I noticed in this video that while Russell Simmons deeply cares about animal rights and compassionate living, he realizes that not everybody shares those feelings…so instead of ‘guilting’ people into joining the movement, he’s focusing more on the health aspects of veganism. “Stay open minded.” Three simple words that could possibly be the trick to finding enlightenment. Think of all the possibilities this world has to offer, if only we are open to it. We’re born open minded…like a blank canvas, ready to be filled in with the colors, textures, and patterns that our journey will bring. But what happens when the canvas fills up? After 30 years of living, does our canvas have space left for more? I say yes…stay open minded. Flip the canvas over and begin to fill up the back. When that’s used up, if you’re still alive, paint on the edges!
The point is, never stop seeking knowledge. Of course, the desire to learn new things means the possibility of having to admit when you’ve been wrong. In order to eliminate meat and dairy, I had to unlearn half a lifetime of dietary knowledge. I had to unlearn the “food pyramid.” I had to acknowledge that cow’s milk (the very thing I was taught would make my bones stronger) is not even meant to be consumed by my own species. It’s a hard pill to swallow…no pun intended.
My blogs are about becoming vegan. The challenges you’ll face, the rewards you’ll reap, and everything in between. My blogs are meant for those who are already aware of the atrocities forced upon the animals of this planet, and who wish to no longer be a part of the problem…but maybe need some help getting started.
